The Carré d’Art

Facing the temple is the Carré d’Art F [map] ( www.carreartmusee.com ; place de la Maison Carrée; Tue–Sat 10am–6pm; permanent collection free, charge for exhibitions), a contemporary art museum and public library in a glass-and-steel building designed by the British architect Sir Norman Foster, which brilliantly echoes the form of the ancient temple. The collection focuses on European art since 1960, with particular emphasis on movements such as Arte Povera and New Realism, and work by French and Mediterranean artists. Artists well represented include Martial Raysse, Christian Boltanski and Arman.

This mix of the ancient and the modern is typical of Nîmes. There are commissioned artworks all over the city, notably a Philippe Starck bus stop (Abribus on avenue Carnot) and crocodile fountain by Martial Raysse in the place du Marché.
